Shall We Play A Game?
MARCOS ARIAS, SARAH WARDLAW
For grades 8-10
TA option for grades 11 - 12
What about games keeps us captivated? Humans have been playing games even before the invention of written language. Pharaohs in Ancient Egypt played a board game called Senet. The Vikings spread Tafl, a skill based game where men defend a king from an invading army, across Europe. It eventually became chess. In 1903, Lizzie Magie, an actress in Maryland, invented the Landlord’s Game. In 1935, Charles Darrow patented a game with striking resemblance to Magie’s version but called it Monopoly. What better way to understand games than to play them and design our own?
Take a deep dive into the world of tabletop games for two weeks. We will play games ranging from simple strategy games, classic board games, tabletop RPGs, and the board game revival. We will explore the interaction between games and public spaces. We will talk to game developers and learn about the modern process of game design. Come play, design, and learn regardless of your prior gaming experience!
