California Land and Sea
JUSTIN SWEITZER, SEAN WINNIK
For grades 8 -9
This course will focus on fascinating elements of our local ecology, both on land and in the surrounding waters. We will have oceanographic investigations to study sea water variables such as salinity and temperature, as well as studying marine life in the laboratory in addition to kayaking and tidepooling activities. On land, students will engage in geologic investigations, plant classification, and wetlands ecology investigations. After discussing sustainable fishing practices, the class will visit a fish market to shop for our Sustainable Seafood Cook Off. In addition to local field trips, the class will involve an overnight trip to more fully explore both land and ocean ecosystems. Students will conduct culminating presentations in small groups as well as prepare an individual journal of the activities, discussions, and experiments conducted throughout this course. This is a perfect class for students interested in the interrelationships between land and sea and help us to us to better understand our dynamic planet.
